Job Summary & Key ResponsibilitiesThe part-time academic will be responsible for delivering BIOL 4003.03, Indigenous Perspectives in Conservation Biology. This is an online-asynchronous course that will be offered in the Summer session, July 6 - August 21, 2026.This course takes a holistic approach to conservation biology. Paradigms and frameworks in Indigenous science are explored through guided online discussions, digital resources, and critical reflection on conservation contexts. Native knowledge systems from Turtle Island are explored to highlight the roles and duties Indigenous peoples have with attention to Canada's colonial framework and the treaties.Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including lectures, preparation and evaluation of tests and reports, assisting and responding to students, grade submission, etc. The part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time before and after the official course dates in preparation for the course and marking assignments.Given the online delivery of this course, the successful applicant is not required to work in-person on campus. This position reports to the Chair of the department.
Qualifications/Requirements of PositionAs this course centers Indigenous knowledge systems, candidates who self-identify as Indigenous peoples are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in Indigenous knowledge systems relevant to the course, which may include lived experience, community-based knowledge, and/or scholarly work grounded in Indigenous perspectives.A graduate degree in Biology or a related field, or an equivalent combination of academic training and Indigenous knowledge, is required. Experience with the learning management system used at Dalhousie University (Brightspace), or a willingness to participate in training prior to the start of the course, is expected.Candidates must demonstrate strong teaching or knowledge-sharing experience, effective communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively. Teaching experience may include university instruction, community-based education, mentorship, or other forms of knowledge transmission. Additional experience in online teaching, digital learning tools, or web-based technologies is considered an asset.First-time applicants must provide the names of two referees; these may include academic or community-based references.
Salary Range/Pay Rate Per CUPE Collective Agreement
