- Design robotic and assembly systems, production gauges, jigs, and automation equipment
- Perform engineering calculations (materials strength, speeds, horsepower, force, pressure, etc.)
- Analyze designs for compliance with safety and industry standards
- Collaborate with electrical designers on system requirements
- Select purchase components for assemblies and manage requisitions
- Create detailed drawings, bills of materials, and models using SolidWorks
- Assist manufacturing teams with issues during build, debug, and project integration
- Communicate with customers, technical staff, and vendors for specifications and changes
- Provide accurate time/resource estimates and track progress for project managers
- Supervise mechanical design efforts and delegate tasks at a project level
- Support proposals and estimating design labor hours
- Help develop departmental and design standards
- Periodically oversee Co-op students and Junior Designers
- Organize project documentation (quotes, drawings, schedules, etc.)
- Ensure compliance with health and safety rules
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives
- Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
- 5+ years’ experience in special-purpose equipment and/or automation design
- Proficiency in SolidWorks (required)
- Experience with robotic cells and assembly systems (preferred)
- Knowledge of pneumatic and electrical devices (switches, load cells, LVDTs, etc.)
- Working knowledge of common machine shop techniques (an asset)
- Strong conceptual design and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Effective communication skills (written and verbal) across all organizational levels
- High level of integrity, dependability, and results orientation
- Hands-on experience with robotic automation projects
- Strong background in Design for Manufacture/Maintenance
- Proven leadership in supervising design teams
