- Ensuring tradespersons have the tools, materials, and equipment required to safely complete their work.
- Preparing time and material estimates for upcoming jobs.
- Mentoring new staff and apprentices, and supporting the identification of training needs.
- Managing timecard entry for all trades within their discipline.
- Initiating work requests when required and coordinating repairs with other trades, powerhouse, or design staff.
- Promoting compliance with all company safety programs and maintaining good workplace housekeeping.
- Coordinating and assigning maintenance work requests (WRs) and executing established preventative maintenance (PM) schedules to increase WL Maintenance productivity.
- Enhancing safety culture and organizational excellence through leadership, accountability, communication, and process improvement.
- Carrying out quality control checks on all completed work.
- Performing routine maintenance and repairs.
- Promoting adherence to operational, health, safety, and environmental policies through strong leadership and communication.
- Working from drawings and sketches, and providing material take‑offs and labour estimates.
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings to required specifications.
- Chairing morning start‑up meetings with assigned trade teams.
- Conducting or facilitating field investigations/walkdowns of site conditions and consulting engineering drawings and related documentation to support maintenance program (MP) and & work management (WM)Planning Coordinators.
- Coordinating and planning with other Lead Hands when multi‑trade work is required, ensuring schedules are met.
- Promoting adherence to all operational, safety, and environmental policies, including responsibilities under the Canadian Labour Code Part II.
- Providing feedback to Project Supervisors on Trade Team members to support development and growth.
- Maintaining confidentiality in all matters.
- Participating in and maintaining all required operational and safety training.
- Maintaining current skills by completing mandatory training, videos, readings, and seminars.
- Sharing learned knowledge and skills with peers.
- Identifying and reporting real or potential safety hazards and wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Adhering to Workplace Safety and Health procedures and the WHMIS program, and working safely at all times.
- Informing co‑workers of unsafe practices or equipment.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
- Education
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Completed apprenticeship training and be qualified as an Instrument Technician with an Interprovincial Red Seal Ticket.
- Experience
- Must have 5 years’ experience as a qualified Instrument Technician.
- Experience in a wide variety of industrial work environments.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Must be skilled in the performance of the work of the trade mainly concerned.
- Must possess the ability to interpret and to follow instructions.
- Must have the ability to assign, supervise, and inspect the work of the trade concerned.
- Must possess a sense of responsibility and the ability to work without direct supervision.
- Initiative and judgement to organize and maintain flow of work and accuracy of records.
- Must be punctual, dependable and safety-minded.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to meet deadlines.

- Mechanical ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment.
- Determine how equipment operates by looking at a diagram or blueprint.
- Must be familiar with responsibilities, as described in the Canada Labour Code Part II.
- Must possess a thorough knowledge and understanding of the work of the trade concerned.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
- We have a compressed work week: Four (4) days per week, ten (10) hours per day for a forty (40) hour work week, starting at 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- This position is part of the IA Machinists 608 Union and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in their Collective Agreement. As a member of this bargaining unit, you’ll benefit from clear expectations around hours of work, wages, vacation, and other conditions that support a fair and consistent working environment.
- Work involves bending, lifting, crouching, climbing, and frequent standing.
- Must be capable of wearing and working in protective clothing and using PPE equipment as required.
- May be required to perform overtime.
