For information about Transportation and Economic Corridors, visit .Role ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Operations Engineer, the Development and Planning Technologist (DPT) determines and enforces setback requirements for developments; exercises access management in conditionally approving subdivisions; outlines conditions of permits issued for paralleling and crossing utilities; presents the Department's position in the application and interpretation of the relevant parts of the Acts, Legislations and Regulations surrounding the protection of the highway corridors thereby preventing unnecessary future costs associated with improvements to the highway system, due to unregulated development and minimizes the Department's exposure to risk of litigation.The primary responsibilities for the Development and Planning Technologist include, but are not limited to:1. Review and issue Permits:
  • Roadside Development Permits.
  • Utility Permits.
  • Sign Permits.
2. Review and comment on Subdivision & Planning Proposals below:
  • Subdivision / Development Referrals / Land Use Re-designation.
  • Area Structure Plans (Pre-subdivision Plans).
  • Subdivision / Development Appeals.
  • Future Highway Planning.
  • Future Highway Planning.
3. Assess and approve activities within highway rights-of-way including:
  • Access Management / Field Inspection.
  • Sign Approvals / Department Sign Program Delivery.
  • Traffic Accommodation Strategies.
  • Geophysical / Environmental Assessment / Clean-up / Testing & Monitoring / Other Activities.
4. Review referrals outside highway rights-of-way:
  • Road Closures / Road Plan Cancellations.
  • Property Dispositions.
  • Property Purchase / Futures Identification.
5. Maintain Public Contact / Relations / Education:
  • Stakeholder Contact.
  • Public Open Houses / Subdivision and Development Appeal Boards / MGB.

  • Two-year technical diploma in civil engineering, land-use planning, land management or a related field plus six years related highway roadside planning or Highway design and construction experience or,
  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, planning or related field plus four years of related experience or equivalent.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

  • Understanding and knowledge of land use planning process in Alberta as well as long range Department plans.
  • Understanding of Department's structure and relationships with other government departments and agencies.
  • General knowledge of third system of land survey, survey terminology and practices, and highway construction and maintenance practices.
  • Working knowledge of road and utility construction procedures and standards.
  • Familiarity with the manuals and guides used during performance of duties.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret engineering and technical drawings, land surveys, real property reports, and other technical reports.
