- Develop content to engage audiences across several platforms tailored to meet the varying needs of web and mobile audiences.
- Have story ideas daily, a job essential along with the flexibility to quickly pivot to other newsroom priorities to meet changing needs.
- Use social media and other digital tools to uncover what’s breaking and what readers in real time are talking about which quickly needs attention.
- Cultivate sources to break stories and help set the news agenda.
- Work with digital teams to create interactive content, including text, photo, video and other multimedia elements that both engage and enrich readers.
- A graduating journalism school student or graduate, or a candidate from a related field. Newsroom experience is an asset, but you have the ability to quickly layer and prioritize what needs to be done to quickly move up the job learning curve.
- Flexible to work effectively in breaking news, features and short form, along with non-traditional story formats.
- Hungry to make the most of a chance to work in a daily newsroom with top-notch journalists and eager to show what you can do to help by collaborating with colleagues.
- A digger with natural curiosity, not satisfied with pat answers; always looking for hidden story angles and with a talent, or developing one, for explanatory journalism.
- A reporter interested not just in what happened or is happening, but also why and how, with the ability to concisely convey that added meaning to readers.
- Experience and strength in video, podcast presentation and other digital tools is an asset.
- A valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle are also assets.
- A cover letter explaining why you are the best candidate.
- A résumé.
- Three samples of your best published work, if any (samples should show a range of work and an ability to handle complex subjects).
