- Report and write stories for print, web and mobile audiences, meeting readers where they are, and tailor content to meet the varying needs of those platforms.
- Initiate and develop ideas for enterprise stories and investigative projects.
- Cultivate sources and establish expertise to break stories and set the news agenda. File video clips for digital platforms; work with digital teams to create interactive reader content, searchable databases and other digital elements.
- Ideally, you have newsroom experience and are able to quickly work up a learning curve, prioritizing what needs to be mastered to meet news needs.
- Flexible to write effectively in breaking news, features and short form, a job essential, along with non-traditional story formats such as explainers and Q/As
- Hungry to make the most of a chance to work in a daily newsroom with top-notch journalists and eager to show what you can do to help the room.
- A digger, not satisfied with pat answers; always looking for hidden story angles and with a talent for explanatory journalism to help engage readers.
- A reporter interested not just in what happened or is happening, but also why and how, with the ability to concisely convey that added meaning to readers.
- Strength in data analysis and the ability to effectively mine social media, to stay abreast of reader interests in the moment and beyond, are core strengths.
- Experience and strength in video or podcast presentation is an asset.
- A valid driver’s licence and a personal vehicle are also assets.
