ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITYBlack & McDonald's Western Utilities team is growing! If you are a committed and collaborative individual looking to contribute to a hard-working, innovative team, this opportunity is for you.Based in Calgary, the Lead Hand is responsible for performing and leading general activities on year round underground URD distribution construction sites in Calgary and surrounding areas. They will liaise with tradespersons, coordinators, managers, and site superintendent personnel to accomplish project milestones in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Take initiative to lead a URD team.
  • Load and unload construction materials and move materials to work areas.
  • Assist tradespersons (electricians) as required.
  • Provide direction and guidance to heavy equipment operators to secure special attachments to equipment, signal operators to guide them in moving equipment and provide assistance in other activities.
  • Assist in installing various utilities and being familiar with specifications requirements with Fortis, Atco Gas, Shaw / Rogers and TELUS shallow installation practices.
  • Level earth / sand / gravel to fine grade specifications using rake and shovel.
  • Operate pneumatic tools, tampers and tools as directed.
  • Direct traffic at or near construction sites.
  • Perform other activities at construction sites, as directed.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • 2-5 years' experience working in the construction industry in a General Laborer role, on utilities (electrical/civil) projects.
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to work safely
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Possesses a valid Alberta Drivers License, Class 5 (or 3), and a clean drivers abstract
  • Experience in reading and interpreting utility locates/ blueprint drawings, and ordering materials such as aggregates
  • Ground Disturbance Certification
  • Construction Safety Certifications including the following are considered assets.
  • Traffic Control Person (TPS) Certification
  • Flagging Certification
  • Confined Space Awareness/Rescue
  • Fall Arrest
  • WHMIS
  • First Aid
  • Leadership for Safety Excellence (LSE)
