We seek candidates committed to nurturing a community where integrity, compassion, inquiry and courage thrive.The Position:The Head of Library Information Centre is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing library programs, services and resources that support the JK-12 curriculum, enhance information literacy skill building and foster a reading culture.As the Head of Library Information Centre, you will work collaboratively with the Upper School Department Heads and the Administration to set and shape department direction, philosophy and goals aligned to the school's mission, vision, values and strategic plan. You are creative, innovative, open to the ideas of others and inspire with vision. You have proven leadership skills in long-term program planning, teaching information literacy and research skills, and supporting inquiry and interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary teaching and learning methodologies. You are responsible for supervising the library and archives staff, including the Junior School Librarian, Library Technician and College Archivist. You will also manage the library department budget and department resources, including online library resources and services such as the library website and library management system.As an experienced librarian, you will be well-positioned to work with faculty, students and other strategic stakeholders to support the development of new programming, to evolve your practice and to support the learning of others through creative collaboration and facilitating access to high-quality resources. You will demonstrate flexibility, enthusiasm and a willingness to work in a rapidly changing environment. You are open to exploring best practice and drawing on the Havergal context to take an innovative and creative approach to the evolution of the library program and services. All faculty are expected, as part of their role, to participate actively in the life of the school beyond the classroom, including contributions as coaches and facilitators in the arts, athletics, clubs, community life and experiential and global education programs.Specific Accountabilities:Develop and maintain an up-to-date and diverse collection of print and digital resources relevant to the curriculum and teaching and learning at Havergal, and to the personal interests of students;
  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate and teach research and information literacy skills across all subject areas;
  • Collaborate with faculty to design and implement engaging inquiry learning opportunities that integrate multiple literacies and foster critical thinking;
  • Develop online library content (LibGuides) to support teaching and learning, and collaborate with faculty to integrate online tools into a blended learning environment;
  • Promote reading for understanding, enjoyment and personal growth;
  • Create an inclusive and welcoming library environment and manage the library's physical space
  • Create displays to showcase resources and highlight important events/commemorations
  • Manage library invoicing, library department budgets, and library scheduling
  • Manage Upper School circulation
  • Manage duties of library department staff JK-12
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
  • Relevant university qualifications preferably at the graduate level (Bachelor of Education plus Librarianship Part 3 (AQ) or a Master of Library and Information Studies);
  • Certification from the Ontario College of Teachers and be a member in 'Good Standing'; or its equivalent is an asset
  • A minimum of 5 years exemplary teaching experience in an academic, secondary school (Independent school experience is an asset or similar experience working as a librarian in an academic setting).
  • Leadership experience in an educational setting an asset
  • Knowledge of current educational practices;
  • Knowledge of the current research on girls and learning;
  • Knowledge of research and inquiry processes and methodologies
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty to effectively plan and implement interdisciplinary units that support student learning, engagement and success;
  • Knowledge of instructional technology and ability to explore, test and iterate features of the Learning Management System.
